Running Versus Germs
As its now post holiday season, the kids have returned to school, everyone is back to the office, and public transport is crammed ,we commonly see an increase in illnesses as germs spread. Let’s talk about staying fit and healthy amidst the colds and bugs floating around. 🤧🦠
Now, I know we're all pretty determined to keep our training going strong, even when the sniffles come knocking, but it's essential to strike a balance between pushing ourselves and taking care of our health. Here are a few tips to help you navigate through the season without sacrificing your precious running routine:
1️⃣ Timing is everything: Pay attention to your body and listen to what it's telling you. If you feel any symptoms of a cold or flu, it's crucial to take a break from training. Resting for a couple of days can often prevent a minor ailment from turning into something more serious.
2️⃣ Extra precautions: Boost your immune system by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated and eating a healthy balanced diet. Are you getting your five to seven fruit and veg a day or your 30 different fruit, veg, grains, and pulses a week?
3️⃣ Modify intensity and duration: If you're feeling under the weather, it's best to dial down the intensity of your training or reduce the duration. Remember, it's okay to take it easy sometimes. Your body will thank you later!
4️⃣ If you have the sniffles then I certainly don’t want to see you at training! Don’t be passing your germs to me or any of your team mates!
5️⃣ Hygiene matters: Proper hygiene can go a long way in preventing the spread of germs. Wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your face. When it comes to sharing coffee mugs, hand towels, or lip balm let's just say it's better to play it safe and keep those items for your personal use.
While it's crucial to take precautions, it's equally important not to let the fear of catching a cold keep you from lacing up those running shoes. Just be mindful, listen to your body, and adapt your training as needed. Speak to your coach and they will offer helpful advice, even if they tell you not to run for a few days! Training can certainly boost your immune system, but training whilst ill is not advisable.
Happy running, everyone! And let’s keep those bugs at bay! ✨💪
